Heavy rainfall forecast for Nelson
Sunday 17 January 2016. 12:00pm. Release 001
MetService has issued a Severe Weather Warning which includes the areas of Nelson and the Richmond Ranges. The warning is for a period of significant and intense heavy rain, which is expected from midday Monday into Tuesday, with 100 to 180mm likely to accumulate in a 15 to 18 hour period.
A low pressure system over the Tasman Sea is expected to move across the region, bringing with it significant periods of rain in a very humid northerly flow.
The heavy rain is expected from midday Monday through to 3am Tuesday. It is forecast that 100 to 150mm is likely to accumulate in the ranges, while 50 to 90mm could accumulate in some lower lying areas. Maximum rainfall intensities of 25 to 35 mm/hr from Monday night.
This amount of rain will cause streams and rivers to rise rapidly, slips and surface flooding, and could make driving conditions hazardous.
It is recommended that people be prepared for this heavy rainfall and be vigilant, especially around rivers and streams.
